Since 1970, approximately 150 employees have been producing high-tech machines for furniture manufacture at Priess + Horstmann. The Design and Development departments create bespoke solutions for processing fronts, sides and base panels as well as carcase assembly, feeding and handling technology. All individual components are

tailored to the customer’s specific requirements and combined to produce one production line. Thus, we are able to produce high-performance individual machines and perfectly compatible, interlinked machine lines for batch size 1 production of kitchen, bathroom, living room, bedroom and office furniture.

Our Company History

The following years represent the impressive success story of a family-owned company and its employees.

1970 - 1980

Geschichte 1970 Priess und Horstmann

1970 – 1980

On 1 April 1970 Wilfried Prieß, Ewald Horstmann and Reinold Prieß found the machine factory Priess + Horstmann in Unterlübbe in the German region of Eastern Westphalia. The products designed and built there are drilling and press-fitting machines for furniture hinges. In 1973, the company first participates in the Hanover trade fair, presenting the BAT-I. Export orders from England, Italy, Norway, France and Switzerland follow. The 100th machine is delivered as early as 1974. At the end of the 1970s, the trend in the furniture industry goes toward more diversity with smaller batch sizes. Priess + Horstmann successfully develops the first automatic program-controlled drill AG-BA with conventional relay control for processing variable drill patterns in furniture carcase side panels.

1981 - 1990

1981 – 1990

The increasing demand for flexibility with more and more units on the machines and the added weight caused by this leads to the idea of moving the lightweight workpiece instead of the heavy unit. A new Priess + Horstmann design principle is born. We retain the ability to process from below. Construction of the first machine with a PLC control system in multi-processor technology. Exports to Africa, Egypt, England, USSR and the German Democratic Republic. By this point, 30 employees work at the machine factory.

1991 - 2000

25 Jahre Pries und Horstmann
1995 is a year of celebration: Priess + Horstmann enjoys its 25th anniversary! On the occasion of the company anniversary, the three managing partners Wilfried Prieß, Reinold Prieß and Ewald Horstmann (left to right) look back at a company history of continual and stable development and forward to excellent prospects for the future.

1991 – 2000

Within the framework of a large volume order comprising numerous production lines for a local kitchen furniture manufacturer the thousandth Priess & Horstmann machine begins operation. The number of employees grows to 60. A completely re-developed BAT-DTW emerges in response to the demands of the furniture industry. This machine model is the first to be able to process all six sides of the workpiece in one pass through the machine. Björn Prieß and Sven Prieß, the sons of Wilfried Prieß, enter the company.

2001 - 2010

Auf der XYLEXPO in Mailand wird die BAT-TAX-CNC zur Frontenbearbeitung vorgestellt
At the XYLEXPO in Milan Priess + Horstmann introduces the BAT-TAX for front machining and receives several orders immediately.

2001 – 2010

The number of national and international customers grows to over 200. Construction of an adjacent production hall expands the plant area to a total of 3,800 m². The BAT-TAX is developed, achieving greater performance thanks to use of a linear motor for workpiece transport through the drilling and fitting press-insertion zone. Moreover, the BAT-DTW with 6-sided machining is completely redesigned. The new, patented concept for workpiece transport and clamping this machine contains leads to a significant increase in performance and makes it possible to process workpieces with trapezium and arc shapes.

2011 - 2020

Sven Prieß und Björn Prieß (v.l,n.r.) leiten das Unternehmen in der zweiten Generation.

Sven Prieß and Björn Prieß (left to right) are the second generation to manage the company.

2011 – 2020

Since the workforce has grown to more than 90 employees, production requires the use of automated production sequences internally as well. Priess + Horstmann installs new software for creating CNC programs for the in-house 5-axis milling machines as well as a workpiece and document management system. The newly developed, patented spindle sleeve drilling gear with a spindle locking mechanism is used for the first time on a BAT-DTW equipped with many units in a craftsman’s workshop. In 2011, Priess + Horstmann shares a joint exhibition booth at the LIGNA Trade Fair with the companies IMA and Schelling. The highlights include a linear machine for fronts. In 2014, Björn and Sven Prieß become managing directors, sharing the leadership position with their father Wilfried Prieß. The company is now run by two generations of the founder family. The ERP and CAD system is expanded by automatic drawing preparation accompanying a bar code on the production drawings for in-house workpiece tracking with shorter workpiece provision times and a lower workload in design and work preparation. In 2020, the 150 employees of Priess & Horstmann produce high-tech machines for sophisticated furniture manufacture based on 50 years of company tradition.
